Clyde Gateway URC has embarked on £2.1m works to create an improved transport hub at Rutherglen. Works began in May 2009 to improve pedestrian connections from Main Street to Rutherglen by creating a pedestrian priority route along Castle Street, re-directing traffic via an upgraded Green Road, new granite surfacing, lighting, signage and real time travel information. The second phase of works along Victoria Street to Farmeloan Road will include additional car parking, a lay by at the local shops and new surfacing.
As part of this project, Clyde Gateway URC is delighted to have been able to secure renowned artist and sculptor Kenny Hunter, who is perhaps best known for 'Citizen Firefighter' outside Glasgow Central Station. Kenny has been commissioned to deliver a piece of artwork for the gable end of the tenement on Victoria Street. The subjects of the artwork are a young boy of primary school age and a collection of local birdlife. The composition of the boy and the birds suggests the importance of educating children to understand and engage with their natural environment. While the boy is nurtured by the school to appreciate the natural world around him, he also looks beyond this from his elevation to the wider world and his future engagement with it.
The project is progressing and will be due for completion 30th November 2009.
