Sha Nazir: Burgh Primary School Art Project

Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire

January 10

The Burgh Primary School in Rutherglen, near Glasgow worked with Artist Sha Nazir from October 2009 to November 2009.  The project was enabled by funding from Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company.

Working in partnership with the school, this project provided a platform...

“Thank you for giving us a chance to work and learn with an art specialist.

From the interview process through to completion of the project, the class and teacher thoroughly enjoyed learning from Sha. At interview he outlined what he thought he could help the class with and he certainly delivered.

P4/5 had not worked with acrylic paint before so that was a first, and they portrayed scenes around Glasgow in vivid colours. He created a cartoon storyline, photographed the children in many action poses, took pictures of Glasgow scenes and blended them in to create their own cartoons. Three of the groups created their own storylines which made it for them even more of an achievement.

The children had to draw frame by frame, their own scenes, moving the storyline on a bit at a time. Sha showed the class how he produced cartoons using 'moviemaker' and many will be able to attempt this at home.

He had the children remain focussed when drawing, providing them with their own sketchbooks for practice and they also composed a diary on a daily basis on their progress.

They enjoyed every part of the project with many voting for the open top bus tour at the start. The piece of writing after the project was clearly influenced by his work as it was a cartoon and captions. The quality was much better than the class last year who did not have the benefit of working with an artist.

Thanks again from a more enlightened teacher.”

Sha Nazir: Burgh Primary School Art Project

Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire

January 10

The Burgh Primary School in Rutherglen, near Glasgow worked with Artist Sha Nazir from October 2009 to November 2009.  The project was enabled by funding from Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company.

Working in partnership with the school, this project provided a platform for young people to become active players in an exciting and innovative initiative, in response to the school curriculum topic: Glasgow.  The project aimed to encourage young people to direct their focus on a particular aspect of this very wide ranging topic - to research, explore, imagine, create and enjoy - and produce fantastic artwork enabled by a truly unique learning experience.

The children sought to illustrate movement from a stationary object!  How can simple lines look like action is happening? What happens when we move around and interact with motionless objects?

The children explored these ideas using a variety of artistic processes throughout a three week period: 5 days a week, 2 hours a day, which is only 30 hours to:

1.Create ideas;

2.Research and experiment;

3.Make a plan;

4.Choose artist materials;

5.Create artworks;

6.Display artworks.

In total, class 4/5 took part in 1 dance class, wrote 4 stories, worked together on 4 A1 acetate landscapes, researched 6 Charles Rennie Mackintosh buildings, designed 24 logos, seen over 30 Glasgow landmarks, painted 48 pictures, drew and inked more than 160 frames of animation, took over 300 digital photos, sketched over 360 pages in sketchbooks, and in total spent 1800 minutes thinking about and creating art.
