In December 2004 RMJM, with Barr Construction, won the commission to design four new primary schools in the north of Glasgow. In August 2005, RMJM Arts Commissioning invited artist Jane Kelly to create art interventions to respond to the principles driving the architecture and the landscape...

“The Four Glasgow Schools commission has offered me the opportunity to develop ideas on the relationships between architecture and its landscape, between the landscape and its structures and between the structures and their planting. In addition, I have explored the use of colour to orchestrate the connectedness between all the elements and the functions of these specific built environments.

Consultation with the schools revealed shared aspirations to maximise use of their new grounds through a diverse range of activities from quiet study to energetic play. The landscape architect and I have translated this as a design need for outdoor classrooms, spectator spaces, quiet areas, garden and ball walls.”

Jane Kelly: Four Glasgow Schools

In December 2004 RMJM, with Barr Construction, won the commission to design four new primary schools in the north of Glasgow. In August 2005, RMJM Arts Commissioning invited artist Jane Kelly to create art interventions to respond to the principles driving the architecture and the landscape scheme.

Jane Kelly's artistic response – amphitheatres, garden spaces, informal planting and seating can be used by pupils throughout the school day: as outdoor classrooms, meeting areas, for playing and eating lunch. Every detail of sight lines, the alignment of paths, colour (exterior and interior) and planting has been refined and augmented by Kelly and RMJM landscape architect Guto Jones. The four projects were completed in November 2006 and education and interpretation work with each school will continue beyond this date, enabling pupils to plant spring bulbs and plan for future developments.
