Kenny Hunter: We Adapt

Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire

January 10

Urban Regeneration Company, Clyde Gateway embarked on £2.1m of works to create an improved transport hub at Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire.  Works began in May 2009 to improve pedestrian connection from Main Street to Rutherglen Station by creating a pedestrian priority route along Castle Street, re-directing traffic via an upgraded Green Road, new granite surfacing, lighting, signage and real time travel information.  The second phase of works along Victoria Street to Farmeloan Road includes additional car parking and new surfacing.

As part of this project, Clyde Gateway URC is delighted  to have been able to secure renowned artist Kenny Hunter who is perhaps best known for his 'Citizen Firefigher' sculpture for Strathclyde Fire Brigade, just outside Glasgow Central Station.  Kenny was commissioned to deliver a new work for a challenging gable end - a position that animates the new streetscaping works.

The subjects of the artwork are a young boy of primary school age and a collection of local birdlife.  The composition of the boy with the birds suggests the importance of educating children to understand and engage with their natural environment.  While the boy is nurtured by the school to appreciate the natural world around him, he also looks beyond this from his elevation to the wider world and his future engagement with it.
